New Study on the Radioactive Waste and Shipment Directives

Spark is proud to support the European Commission (DG ENER) in evaluating two key pieces of Euratom legislation: the Radioactive Waste Directive and the Shipment Directive.

These acts have been instrumental in establishing a robust framework for the safe and responsible management of radioactive waste and spent fuel across the EU. They address long-term containment and isolation from humans and the environment, protection against ionising radiation, and the supervision of transboundary shipments.

The support study will gather data on their effectiveness, efficiency, coherence, relevance, and EU added value of both Directives. It will also explore opportunities for simplification and will consider how the Directives interact with other EU and international frameworks such as the Joint Convention, the Basic Safety Standards Directive, and the Nuclear Safety Directive.

The support study will provide DG ENER with a holistic and systemic assessment of the Directives’ implementation and impact. The findings will inform the Commission’s evaluation report and guide future policy development to strengthen the EU’s approach to radioactive waste and spent fuel management.
