Maria Anghel is a Legal Consultant at Spark Legal and Policy Consulting, having joined the company in 2023. Maria is part of the Communications Networks and Technology area and supports with Data Protection compliance activities.
At Spark, Maria works on multiple studies for DG CONNECT. Maria has been involved in several studies related to the Digital Services Act. Examples include broad investigations like a Study on systemic risks and their mitigation under the DSA, or a Study focused on technical assistance for market intelligence, evidence gathering and compliance monitoring, as well as research targeting specific systemic risks such as financial scams, human trafficking, or the recruitment of minors by criminal groups. She is also involved in a study for DG CONNECT on the AI Act, providing legal assistance as part of the identification, monitoring and evaluation of large-scale sociotechnical risks posed by GPAI models. Maria often undertakes data protection related tasks on studies for other clients concerning digitalisation, including for DG JUST, DG TAXUD, MOVE, DG ENER or social partners (SIDE-CIC project).
Maria obtained her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in European Law from the University of Groningen in 2023, with her final thesis focusing on personal data processing and the Digital Markets Act. Her work on this topic has been awarded by the Dutch Authority for Consumers & Markets. Before joining Spark, Maria worked as a research assistant, focusing on topics ranging from the right to housing to pharmaceutical markets. In addition, she has worked as a teaching assistant for various Faculty of Law courses.
Her mother tongue is Romanian, and she speaks English fluently.
